Now, when is "Inherit Backup State" actually allowed? When your laptop is utterly destroyed or stolen. Each one of these will appear in your "Overview" Backblaze web login. When you re-install the name of your new backup will not be "ZebraBackup", if you want to change it, change it to "CutePuppyBackup" to keep it separate. To help you straighten all this out, go into "Settings." on any computer and set the "Online Name for this Backup" to be something really unique. Uninstall/reinstall/Never use "inherit backup state" under any circumstances for any reason. They literally have no idea the other exists in this case. You are guaranteed to have 2 flawlessly working backups. THE SOLUTION IS EASY -> uninstall/reinstall and never, under any circumstances, use Inherit Backup State. Every time you "Inherit" the backup, the computer that just inherited is the only one that has the "right" to backup. Each computer must have a "unique" hguid.ģ) Backblaze detected this and "Safety Froze".Ĥ) Now you can "ping pong" back and forth. You used "Apple Migration Assistant" to bring over all your data, this accidentally cloned your desktop backup -> you copied the bzinstall.xml over to the new laptop which by definition is not supported. The line looks like this:ġ) You backed up one machine, let's say your older Macintosh is a desktop to make this clear.Ģ) You bought the new M1 Mac laptop. Your computer's hguid (host globally unique id) is found in the file /Libary/Backblaze.bzpkg/bzinstall.xmlĪnd please don't attempt to edit that file, that won't work. To backup two separate machines, they need two separate licenses, and two separate "hguids". I think the critical failure here was when reinstalling, as I was asked to do, and doing inherit state, didn't give me the option to inherit the correct backup because it didn't see the frozen backup as an option, only saw the good backup from the other machine, and assumed that was the only choice. Just giving up and doing a clean backup on other machine now, and now too worried to reinstall BB on MBA. Tried to inherit it back, resulting in persistent unknown error. Other machine is now how disconnected from its previous backup that had been running for years. I just gave up on the MBA, deleted the backup, and might reinstall later.Seems BB on my MBA decided to inherit the state of my other machine, without even giving me the option.Next day, my other mac has a warning popup saying to uninstall backblaze, its no longer needed.I reinstall, do everything by the guide, inherit state (no pulldown for what to inherit).MBA is is perfect shape, had been backing up for months, fully passing disk checks just now, no timemachine funny business, I never even used timemachine. On a new MBA M1, backup "safely frozen".
